Abstract
1,172,310. Automatic gain control. BRITISH BROADCASTING CO. 27 March, 1968 [17 March, 1967], No. 12733/67. Heading H3T. In a compressor circuit comprising a variable gain element and a control circuit for controlling the gain thereof, the time in which the control circuit responds to a decrease in signal amplitude varies with the signal amplitude while the time in which the control circuit responds to an increase in signal amplitude is not so varied. The gain of variable gain element 21 is controlled by a control circuit comprising full-wave diode rectifiers D1, D3, having a time-constant circuit comprising capacitor C1 and resistor R1 in shunt with which is resistor R4 in series with the drain to source path of a field effect transistor TR. A second control circuit comprising full-wave diode rectifiers D2, D4 provided with delay bias source 20 controls the gate potential of field effect transistor TR via smoothing circuit R2, C2 and a voltage-limiting Zener diode Z in conjunction with resistor R3. At small signal levels diodes D2, D4 are non-conductive, fieldeffect transistor TR biased to low impedance, and resistor R4 shunted across resistor R1 giving an automatic gain control of short return time-constant. On large signals, however, diodes D2, D4 become conductive and bias field-effect transistor TR to high impedance, whereby the return time-constant of the automatic gain control is determined by resistor R1 alone and is high.
