Abstract

In a load-sensitive vehicle braking system of the kind comprising a pressure-proportioning valve 10 disposed in an hydraulic line between a master cylinder and certain wheel brake cylinders of the vehicle, e.g. the rear wheel brake cylinders, a movable member of the valve which controls the operating characteristics of the valve, particularly the cut-off pressure at which the valve commences to function, is engaged by one end of a spring 44 which includes a coil portion 46 and the other end of which is connected to a part of the vehicle, e.g. the rear axle, which moves relative to the part which carries the valve 10 when a change in vehicle load occurs. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the valve 10 is mounted, together with a bracket 41, on a side member 40 of the vehicle body, and the spring 44 consists of a pair of side-by-side spring elements, each having a coil portion.46, one pair of adjacent spring ends being secured to a lever 42 which is pivoted on the bracket 41 at 43 and engages the movable member of the valve which is in the form of a yoke 23, while the other pair of adjacent spring ends are in the form of juxtaposed eyes for receiving a bolt for securing them to the vehicle axle casing. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, a single spring element is used the ends of which extend as two arms arranged at an acute angle to each other, one end engaging the movable member 11 of the valve while the other end has a bent portion 52 to engage over a lever 51 which forms part of a suspension assembly of the vehicle and is clamped to the lever by a strap 53. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), the bent portion 52 is omitted and this end of the spring is received in the apertured head (59) of a screw (57) which is adjustably secured to a slotted strap (54) by a nut (58). In a similar embodiment to that of Fig. 3 (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) the axis of the coil (46) is disposed on the axis of the lever (51) and the end of the spring secured to the lever (51) is in the form of a plate (61), the remainder of the spring being encased in a rubber sleeve. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8, the spring has an inturned end 64 within the coil portion which engages in a slot 66 in the end 68 of a shaft carrying the lever 51.
