Abstract
1,172,048. Epoxy resin composition. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 24 April, 1968 [12 June, 1967 (2)], No. 19302/68. Heading C3B. [Also in Division H1] A liquid casting composition comprises an epoxy resin, curing agent and accelerator and a mineral filler material, a portion at least of which has a coefficient of linear thermal expansion not greater than 8 x 10<SP>-6</SP> in./in./‹C. and has a cumulative particle size distribution (by weight) such that: Up to 80% .. .. > 30Á Up to 35% .. .. > 20Á 20-60% ..... > 10Á 40-80% .. .. .. > 4Á 60-90% .. .. .. > 2Á 76-95% ..... > 1Á 86-100% ..... > 0À4Á Suitable fillers are fused quartz, beryl and lithium aluminium silicate. The mineral filler may further comprise 20-25% by wt. of the composition of alumina trihydrate having an average particle size of 6À5-8À5 Á. The total filler may comprise 65-85% of the composition. Suitable epoxy resins are glycidyl ethers of polyhydric phenols, epoxy novolac resins or cycloaliphatic 1,2-epoxy resins. Uses.-Encapsulation of electrical apparatus, e.g. transformer or bushings.
