Abstract

[Also in Division B3] In a pressure vessel exposed on one side to hydrogen and comprising at least two tubular units of length L joined by circumferential welds at points 3, at least one of the units being laminated, the side of a circumferential weld 13, 33 that would otherwise be exposed to hydrogen is covered by a single-layered protective plate 14, 34 joined to the adjacent plates of the tubular units by welds 15, 35, the plates and welds directly exposed to hydrogen are made of hydrogen resistant steel and a pressure equalising hole 16, 36, 36<SP>1</SP> extends through the wall of the vessel or a circumferential weld to one of the plates exposed to hydrogen. The circumferential welds 13, 33 and plates other than those exposed to hydrogen are of carbon or low alloy steel. The hydrogen resistant steel contains Cr or Mo and, if desired, Ni, W, Ti, V, Zr or Nb.
