Abstract

A brake band acting on a web-roll spindle, as described in Specification 1,046,803, is controlled by a fluid pressure system, which includes a dancer roller assembly pivoted to a shaft 3 and biased against the web tension by a fluid cylinder system 4, 5, 6. The datum pressure, equivalent to the required web tension, is governed by a valve 11. During normal web feeding, a valve 16 controlled by a cam 20 fixed to the shaft 3, governs the fluid pressure applied to a diaphragm 19 which is arranged to influence the web-roll brake and thereby control web tension. When the web feed is to be stopped, a normally closed, solenoid-operated valve 24 is opened, and maximum fluid pressure from the source 8 is applied to the diaphragm 19. However, application of maximum pressure for any length of time tends to cause excessive web tension and snatching. Therefore, means is provided to relieve the fluid pressure as soon as the web is tensioned to a predetermined amount. This means comprises a normally closed, solenoid-operated valve 26 which is opened simultaneously with valve 24. A valve 27 controlled by a cam 28 on the shaft 3, relieves the pressure when a predetermined web-tension is reached by way of a restrictor valve 29. The diaphragm may be used to control a re-wind drive such as that which includes an electric re-wind motor with torque varying switches or movable brush gear. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,046,803.
