Abstract

1,171,353. Detecting surface flaws photoelectrically. SOC. NOUVELLE DE ROULEMENTS. March 8, 1967 [March 11, 1966], No. 11010/67. Heading G1A. A ball to be inspected for surface defects is held in contact with an optical scanning head by means of a cylinder 1, Fig. 2, which is rotated in the direction F1 and reciprocated in the directions F2 and F3. The optical head comprises a total reflection tube 4 which directs light from a lamp, Fig. 1 (not shown) on to the ball and light reflected therefrom is received by a photo-electric cell 6. If there is a flaw in the surface of the ball 8 the output of cell 6 is reduced and this reduction in output may be used to operate known sorting means for the balls. The cylinder 1 may be covered by a flexible material having a high coefficient of friction with the balls.
