Abstract
1,171,304. Nitrogen-containing polyether derivatives. J. P. STEVENS & CO. Inc. 1 Nov., 1966, No. 48915/66. Heading C3R. [Also in Division D1] Polyether derivatives containing nitrogen are prepared by condensing (1) a polyoxyalkylene compound containing at least three - (-C n H 2n O-)- groups, where n = 2, 3 or 4, and at least 2 terminal groups OH, SH or NRH, where R is hydrogen or lower alkyl, with (2) a polyfunctional amide containing at least two groups per molecule of the formula >NCOZ linked by aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon groups where Z is -CH(R<SP>1</SP>)CH 2 OR<SP>1</SP>, or CH(R<SP>1</SP>)CH 2 Q, wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen or lower alkyl radical and Q is a polar residue of a weak nucleophile. Examples of (1) are polyethylene glycol, triols obtained by reacting alkylene oxides with glycerol and trimethylol propane, tetrols obtained by reacting polyoxyalkylene dihalides with alkanolamines, polyalkyl ether diamines, e.g. N,N<SP>1</SP>-tetrakis (betahydroxyethyl) polyglycol diamine and polyalkyl ether dithiols. Suitable polyfunctional amides include N,N<SP>1</SP>-hexamethylene bis-beta methoxy propionamide and 1,3,5 - tris - (beta - methoxy proprionyl) - s - perhydrotriazine. Suitable polar residues of weak nucleophiles include sulphate, thiosulphate, acetate, formate, propionate, pyridinium and benzyl dimethyl ammonium. The reaction takes place under alkaline conditions using, for example, alkali metal hydroxides, alkoxides, carbonates, bicarbonates, phosphates, silicates and acetates as well as quaternary ammonium hydroxides and tertiary amines. The condensation may be effected in situ on textiles to which they impart anti-static properties and the products may be linear having the recurring unit or cross-linked. By employing mixtures of bifunctional and trifunctional reactants threedimensional networks can be achieved, i.e. by using bifunctional reactants as previously stated in conjunction with a trifunctional or polyfunctional reactant such as pentaerythritol, glycerol or triethanolamine.
