Abstract
1,171,145. Magnetic display device. R. C. SINNOTT, A. W. BOLLS, and R. L. KING, [trading as SINNOTT CO.]. 2 Dec., 1966 [6 Dec., 1965; 11 July, 1966], No. 54056/66. Heading G5C. A display device comprises a transparent window 24 mounted in front of a display wall 12 and defining therebetween a first chamber 54 (Fig. 2) containing a plurality of small magnetic particles, the chamber 54 being separated from a lower chamber 56 containing a plurality of larger particles 62 by a filter 50 through which only the small particles can pass, means 14 for applying alternating magnetic force to both larger and small particles to agitate them whereby a transparent cloud of small particles is formed in the chamber 54, and electromagnetic means 20 mounted behind the display wall for attracting the small particles to the wall in a desired pattern. An electric coil 58 encompassing the lower chamber creates the force to energize the particles and the smaller particles collect in the larger faster moving particles and by so doing increase their energy. As the particles strike the filter 50, the larger ones return to the lower chamber 56 while the small ones are propelled upwards into chamber 54 where they continue their random action and form a transparent cloud. The display magnet assembly 20 mounted behind the wall 12 may comprise seven electromagnets arranged in a rectangular figure 8 pattern. Magnetic plates 56 and 84 countersunk in the loops of the figure form common poles for the electromagnets for energization of any selection of the electromagnets. An erase coil mounted behind the wall 12 is capable of creating a magnetic field perpendicular to the wall 12 for removing the particles therefrom and returning them to the transparent cloud. In other embodiments, not shown, the display electromagnet includes a plurality of alternating magnetic and non-magnetic plates which at their forward ends are shaped to define a word (Fig. 9). The small particles may include two distinct size ranges, and the air may be partially evacuated from the chamber.
