Abstract

1,170,302. Aerials. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. 27 June. 1967 [1 July, 1966], No. 29653/67. Heading H4A. In an aerial array made up of a plurality of elements distributed around a circle, energy is fed at any instant only to a number, less than that plurality, of consecutive elements, and there is a progressive translation with time around the loop of the feed to the elements. Statically operating electronic switches are used for stepping from element to element and continuously varying electronic phase-shifters provide interpolation between steps. As described with particular reference to the de-spinning of the main lobe of radiation from the aerial system of a spin-stabilized earth satellite, twelve elements 1-12, Fig. 1, are arranged in a circle, and three are energized at a time. If the satellite is, for example, rotating in a clockwise sense, at each twelfth part of a revolution thereof power feed is transferred from an element on the left to an element on the right by means of a switching system comprising nine switches C1-C9, Fig. 3, which may be ferrite type circulators. For example, the element 12 is switched out and the element 3 is switched in by the operation of the switch C9. After a twelfth of a revolution the switch C1 changes over from the element 1 to the element 4, and so on. Power is supplied from three continuously phase-shifting devices D1, D2, D3, which maintain the correct direction of the main lobe of radiation between switching steps. The switching sequence is determined by a programming device controlled by pulses from sun sensors and having means for correction by ground command or from an in-board timer. Each element 1-12 may consist of three flat spirals in a row, thus providing circularly polarized radiation and enhanced directivity in a plane containing the axis of the satellite (Fig. 2, not shown). Transmitting and receiving aerials (Ae), (Ar), Fig. 6 (not shown), of the kind described, and a control aerial (T) may be provided. The invention may also be applied, for example to radio beacons.
