Abstract
1,170,275. Universal joints. A. J. ZWICKY. 10 Nov., 1966 [13 Nov., 1965], No. 50477/66. Heading F2U. A resilient shaft coupling comprises a flexible metal bellows 1 welded together with cover rings 4 to shaft flanges 6, 7 and having cast or embedded on its outer and inner surfaces between the corrugations, layers 2, 3, or cording, of rubber, or plastics such as " Araldite" (Registered Trade Mark). One cover ring 4 may be formed with an axial extension (11), (Fig. 4, not shown), to encompass the outer layer 2. The corrugations of the bellows 1 may be perpendicular to the shaft axis as shown, or inclined between 5-90 degrees thereto (Fig. 2, not shown) or, alternatively, the corrugations may be formed axially parallel with the shaft axis (Fig. 3, not shown) for greater rotational elasticity. Conical centring guides 10 are provided on the flanges 6, 7 to facilitate subsequent boring thereof to appropriate requirements.
