Abstract
1,169,976. Selective printers. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE BULL-GENERAL ELECTRIC. 15 March, 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 12241/67. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machinestype-wheel constructions.-A selective printer is provided with a continuously rotating type carrier comprising a shaft 50, Fig. 4, having a number of axially spaced annular grooves 42, 43, 44 forming mounting means for any of the indicated kinds of type-wheels 51, 55, 60 which are arranged contiguously along to shaft and attached thereto by washers 45, that are located in the grooves 42 . . . 44 and attached to the type-wheels by bolts 58. The washers, which have one face inclined with respect to the other face which is contiguous with the type-wheel, are spaced symmetrically with respect to the axis of rotation VW, and are rotated by a tool F (Fig. 5) so as to be locked between the faces of the grooves after the type-wheels have been aligned on the shaft and to anchor the typewheels firmly to the shaft. The axial position of the type wheel 51 is fixed by the washers and its radial position is fixed by one or more radial grub screws 29 acting on a radial fixing pin 28. The type-wheel 60 is provided with recesses 59, 64 the former of which receives the bolt heads of preceding type-wheels and the latter the bolt heads of bolts securing the type-wheel to the shaft 50. In another embodiment the annular grooves are cut transversely by axial flutes 101, 102, 103, Fig. 10, to enable the type-wheels 93 provided with conical, axially resilient spring washers 92, to be pushed axially on to the shaft 100 and then rotated from the sliding position A into an aligned locking position B, in which bolts 95 deform the spring washers 92 against one face of the annular grooves. In another embodiment Figs. 12, 13 the shaft may be provided with axial grooves 111, 112, 113 in which are located combs 114, 115, 116 provided with axially spaced teeth 120, 121, 122 and the type wheels 130 are each provided with a circular groove 131 and recesses 132, 133, 134 for engagement of the respective teeth 120, 121, 122, the type wheels being first pushed axially over the shaft and then rotated about the teeth into an aligned angular position, in which they are secured by radial grub screws 150 and radially slidable pistons 151. In a further embodiment the washers 45 may be replaced by lugs 80 (Fig. 7) provided with bent tongues 84 which on tightening of a screw 82 engage the annular grooves to locate the type-wheels both axially and angularly. Hammer impression arrangements: electric input arrangements.-The selective printer may be provided with a rotary carrier 10, Fig. 1 having a row of characters one for each letter spacing position in a printed line and the carrier which is driven by a motor 14 is associated with a synchronous generator 15 coupled to a comparator 16 which synchronizes the impact of hammers in the hammer mechanism 17. In another embodiment the rotary carrier is provided with type-wheels 35, Fig. 2 spaced at distances corresponding to three letter-spaces and associated with respectively spaced hammers. Letter-spacing arrangements.-The rotary carrier in Fig. 2, is provided with a device including a Cam 31 and a cam-follower 30 which is attached to the second web support to reciprocate the support cyclically so as to move the web transversely and dispose the web under the type-wheels 35 for successive impression, a line being printed in a number of printing cycles, the number depending on the spacing between the type-wheels. Types, dies and printing surfaces.-The typewheel 60, Fig. 4, is provided along its periphery with three rows of alpha-numeric characters 61, 62, 63 and the type-wheel 55 is provided along its periphery with one row of alphanumeric characters which are disposed along a helical line.
