Abstract

1,169,921. Automatic control of engines. OPTIMIZER CONTROL CORP. Nov. 9, 1966 [Nov.9, 1965], No.50299/66. Heading G3R. The thrust controller of a reaction type propulsion engine for a vehicle is oscillated continuously and signals corresponding to the senses of variation of the controller and the velocity or acceleration of the vehicle are compared to produce a signal which adjusts the controller to a maximum thrust position. In Fig. 1, the thrust of a propulsion engine is oscillated above and below a mean value by a controller 8. The resulting effect on the vehicle propelled by the engine is detected by a damped accelerometer 3 which, through a transistor relay 6, produces a signal 15 on increase of acceleration and a signal 16 on decrease. The latter signals are compared with signals 9 and 10 which are produced on movement of controller 8 in one direction or the other. The comparator 7 determines from the signals which direction of movement of controller 8 effects an increase in of acceleration and hence thrust, and then operates a servomotor 11 to adjust the mean setting of controller 8 in this direction so that engine thrust becomes a maximum. An arrangement in which there is continuous alternating adjustment of two engine variables under the control of a single accelerometer to get maximum engine performance is referred to.
