Abstract

1,169,776. Lubricating oil. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 3 Nov., 1967 [20 Dec., 1966], No. 50159/67. Heading C5F. A lubricating oil or hydraulic fluid contains a polyester obtained by condensing (1) an ethylenic derivative of succinic acid or anhydride with (2) a triol or ethylene glycol or a mono- or poly-alkoxy derivative of ethylene glycol The triol may be trimethylolpropane or glycerol. The derivative of succinic acid or anhydride may be the addition product of maleic acid or anhydride with an ethylenic ester, e.g. cetyl oleate. The polyester condensation may be carried out at 80-350‹ C. using 0À5-2 mols. of glycol or triol per mol. of succinic acid or anhydride derivative. In an example, a baryta/P 2 S 3 /polyisobutylene reaction product and calcium sulphonate were added as detergent additives and zinc dialkyldithiophosphate as anti-wear additive.
