Abstract

[Also in Division B6] Ornamented stone slabs are produced by applying a resilient stencil to a surface of the stone slab, abrading the surface through openings in the stencil to produce depressions in the stone slab shaped in accordance with the design of the stencil, filling the depressions with a mixture of crushed stone and a synthetic polymer containing a hardening agent, allowing the mixture to set hard in permanent adhesion to the stone slab and subsequently polishing or blasting the whole of the surface of the stone slab. The crushed stone may be black granite dust, marble, mixed with epoxy resin, polyesters, polyethylene. The final finish may be a polishing to a high lustre, or a sand blasted finish. Artificial pigment may be used in conjunction with the crushed stone and contrasting colours in the design may be used. Following the production of the depressions, a cut-out portion of the stencil may be replaced in the opening from which it was cut, and the depression corresponding to this opening marginally deepened by further abrasion through a gap between adjacent edges of the cut-out portion and the opening of the stencil, the depression then being filled in its deepened margin and the cut-out portion removed before completing the filling.
