Abstract

1,169,534. Platen drier. E. W. HUDSON Ltd. 20 Oct., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 44651/65. Heading F4G. A drying apparatus for skins &c. comprises a stack of superposed, alternately arranged heated platens and vacuum hoods and means for removing from the stack at least part of a selected platen for loading or unloading the dried skin thereon. The stack comprises platen structures 5 ... 8 containing metal platens 10 ... 14 with vacuum hoods on the underside, a platen 4 without a hood and single hood 9, the stack being mounted on a frame 15 vertically movable in a frame 17 by screw pillars 18 driven via gearing by a motor 22. The motor is controlled by a selector mechanism 24 to position the stack at a plurality of predetermined positions wherein the platen is separated from the associated vacuum hood forming part of the adjacent, superposed platen structure and thereafter only that part of the stack below the supported hood is lowered. The transfer and separation mechanism 30 comprises a pivoted frame on each side of the stack having a jack member operative to engage a lower edge of a platen and hold it stationary on further lowering of the stack, and a carriage mounted on each frame is driven along tracks to transfer the platen on to a support structure adjacent the stack.
