Abstract
1,169,365. Measuring mass fluid flow electrically. EVERSHED & VIGNOLES Ltd. Feb.6, 1967 [Feb.9, 1966], No. 5718/66. Headings G1N and G1R. Apparatus for measuring the mass rate of flow of a fluid comprises a movable, tapered member 3 Fig. 1 in the flow path, attached by strain gauges to a fixed casing 7, whereby the force exerted by the fluid flow, representing eV<SP>2</SP>, can be measured, a separate member (not shown) located upstream to measure velocity V, and means for obtaining the quotient eV representing mass flow. The tapered member 3 which is attached to the input conduit 1 by flexible sleeves 10, 11, has four holes 8 positioned where the pressure has a mean value. The force signal eV<SP>2</SP> and the velocity signal V are combined in the circuit of Fig. 3. A clock pulse generator periodically switches on a flip-flop F1, which opens a second flip-flop F2 for the period between two pulses from the velocity meter 12, i.e. a period proportional to 1/v. During this period the force signal eV<SP>2</SP> is fed to an integrator, which thus finds the average value of eV<SP>2</SP>x 1/v i.e. eV, the mass flow rate.
