Abstract

1,169,331. Printing process. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. 15 Feb., 1968 [1 March, 1967 (3)], No. 7441/68. Heading B6C. A method of making a copy from a heat sensitive master sheet comprises the steps of moving a printing member in heat conductive relationship with a master sheet comprising a base having thereon a normally solidly, coloured coating which assumes tacky condition when heated to the tackifying temperature of the coating material and which remains in this tacky condition for a period of time after being cooled below the tackifying temperature heating the printing member to bring the coating in a tacky condition in areas corresponding to a heat pattern produced by the printing member, placing a copy sheet against the coated surface of the master sheet and applying sufficient pressure to cause a quantity of material from the tacky areas to adhere to the surface of the copy sheet, and, if required repeating the copying step using further copy sheets without further heat activation of the master sheet until the material in the tacky areas is depleted. In the drawing a print head 20 having a heatable impression surface 21, is located beneath a master sheet 22, supplied in the form of a web roller 23, to be fed over an idler roller 24 and the print head impression surface 21, around a feed roller 25, operating in conjunction with an idler roller 26 to form a pressure nip 27, and a second idler roller 28 to form a pressure nip 29, and finally over an idler roller 30 into a waste receptacle 31. The sheet 22 has a heatsoftenable coating 32, with a property of staying tacky for a period of minutes to hours after being heated to softened condition. This coating, in dry, solid state, is of the order of several thousandths of an inch in thickness, and preferably is black because of the carbon content. Copy paper supply rolls 33, which exhibit an ink-print-receiving propensity, and receiving rolls 34 are on axes parallel to the axis of the roll 23. The composition of the coating material may comprise a selection from the following constituents: hydrogenated rosin with a softening point range of 80-88‹ C. and an acid number of 8À0, glycerol ester of the above rosin, polyvinyl acetate copolymer, casein, P.V.A., plasticizer, carbon black, diazo dye, defoaming agent, surfactant, anti-blocking agent, chlorinated rubber, sodium silicate.
