Abstract
1,169,180. Breaking. VICKERS Ltd. 16 Feb., 1967 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 49237/65. Heading B3E. A process for parting a normally ductile metallic member into sections comprises inducing a brittle fracture in the member by raising the yield stress above the cleavage stress as a result of introducing a zone of increased stress in the member at the, or each, intended point of fracture and subjecting the material of the member at this point to a high strain rate by means of a high velocity impact. A bar notched at 12 by means 11 is clamped by means 13 and hit by a striker 14. The notch may be machined, pressed or rolled. The striker may be propelled pneumatically, hydraulically, mechanically or electrically, e.g. by a linear induction motor. The bar may be cooled. A notched bar may be supported at spaced points on opposite sides of the notch and hit in the notch by a striker, Fig. 2a (not shown). The apparatus, Fig. 3, may incorporate a double acting pneumatic cylinder 17 with a striker 18 at each end engaging, alternately a bar 10, notched and fed forward by means 19 and clamped by means 20, and a bar 10<SP>1</SP> notched, fed and clamped by similar means 19<SP>1</SP>, 20<SP>1</SP>. Plate may be similarly parted.
