In an exchange including a store Sp the loading of the store is continuously monitored and an engaged signal produced if the loading reaches a given level. As described, dialling pulses arrive at subscriber circuits TS and pass to code converter ECW which generates an address signal in the form of a unique combination of marks on a number of parallel leads. Each time a new address is received, requiring a new section of the store, a counter or integrator Z is incremented. Periodically, by way of unit P, the unit Z is sampled and reset to zero, or decremented. Alternatively the integrator may be continuously discharged. If the sample read out reaches a given value store Sp is caused to send an engaged signal to any subscriber subsequently calling. Unit P may respond to various levels of loading so that the store, depending on its loading, is caused to accept only those calls exceeding a certain priority.
