In a method of making smokeless fuel briquettes by hot compression in which particulate bituminous coal is mixed with a preheated particulate inert material, e.g. coke, which does not soften at the compression temperature, the mixture is partially degassified for from 1 to 15 minutes at 450‹ to 540‹ C. before being compressed, the time and temperature being correlated so that during compressing the content of low temperature tar in the mixture falls to between 0À07% and 0À8% b.w. In an example, anthracite mixed with coke breeze is supplied at a and heated at b to 600‹ C. before being mixed at k with bituminous coal G heated to 250‹ C. at c, and with semicoke from f made from a bituminous coal E. The mix is degassed for about 5 minutes at 480‹ C. in k before being passed to a roller press m. The low temperature tar content is determined by the Fischer method (reference is given) and in this example a content of 10% b.w. for coal G was reduced to 0À5% at the exit of vessel k. In a second example, anthracite and bituminous coal only were used, and degassing continued for about 5 minutes at 505‹ C. in vessel k.
