An extrusion press has a billet container 16 which is located in its holder 20 by parallel keys 36 and can be withdrawn axially therefrom on to two parallel support arms (50), 52 extending from the stationary platen 28. The holder 20 has two opposite keys (34), (36), Fig. 2 (not shown), on its horizontal axis and a lower key (38), Fig. 4 (not shown). Two horizontal support arms (50), 52 are slidable axially in the platen 28 and aligned with the keys (34), 36. The arms 52 may be moved manually or by a power cylinder. To withdraw the container 16 from its holder 20, a split retaining ring (22), Fig. 1 (not shown), is first removed from groove 21. The arms 52 are then secured to the holder 20 by pins 46, (48), Fig. 2 (not shown), so that they extend into the keyways in the container. A disc 54 is fitted over the press stem 14 which is held stationary to prevent movement of the container 16 whilst its holder is withdrawn rearwardly by actuating rods 30 connected to cylinders. Container 16 may be then lifted vertically from the support arms 52.
