In a system for controlling the position of the plunger 1 of a steam valve, an error signal is formed by comparing a signal representing the actual position of the plunger with a signal 11 representing the required position and is amplified in an amplifier 12 energized by a unidirectional voltage derived from the output of the position-sensing means 2 whereby in the event of an open-circuit failure of the position-sensing means or of electric connections thereto said unidirectional voltage falls to zero and hence the signal fed to the electro-mechanical positioning means 13 either falls to zero or assumes a predetermined value such as to leave the plunger in a required safe position. As shown, a unidirectional actual position signal is derived from the difference in the alternating voltages induced in the secondary windings 6 of a rotary differential transformer 2 and the unidirectional voltage for energizing the amplifier 12 is derived from the sum of the alternating voltages induced in the secondary windings 6. A linear differential transformer having E and I cores may be used. The required position signal 11 may be scaled from the output of one or both of the rectifier circuits 15 to avoid inaccuracies due to variations in the alternating voltage applied to the primary winding 5 of the position-sensing transformer.
