Abstract

1,167,196. Lactic acid bacteria. YAKULT HONSHA K.K. Dec.12, 1966, No.55496/66. Heading C6F. Lactic acid bacteria of the species Lactobacillus acidophilus resistant to acidities of the order of pH 3À2, are propagated by the following steps: (i) keeping either the excrement of infants (less than 6 months old) fed on mother's milk or vaginal secretions in an acidic solution of pH 3À1-3À3 and at a temperature of 35‹ -40‹C. for 3-24 hours, (ii) isolating and cultivating the surviving bacteria (only Lactobacillus acidophilus survives the acidity), (iii) passing the bacteria through mammalian (human) intestines one or more times and (iv) separating the conditioned lactic acid bacteria from the excrement by a further treatment in acid.
