Abstract

1336015 E. coli endotoxins UNILEVER Ltd 2 June 1971 [3 June 1970] 26746/70 Heading A5B Pigs are treated to improve their resistance to gastro-intestinal disorders by introducing into the pig intestine, by way of the mouth, the endotoxins of one or more of the Escherichia coli serotypes 08, 045, 0138, 0139, 0141, 0147 and 0149, free from the living E. coli organisms. The endotoxins may be administered in water or in a pig feed before the pig is weaned, in particular administration is begun at the age of 4 to 10 days. Pig feed compositions comprise one or more, preferably all seven, of the E. coli serotypes and a nutrient material, preferably comprising a protein, a carbohydrate source, vitamins and/or mineral elements. The endotoxins may be obtained by culturing the E. coli serotype, separating from the culture the bacteria grown in it, and killing the separated bacteria, e.g. by heat, to cause release of endotoxins, the endotoxins remaining bound to the killed bacteria being released by treatment with an enzyme such as trypsin, lysozyme, pepsin or lipase. The pig feed may be prepared by making an aqueous premix of endotoxins and one or more of the ingredients of the feed at pH 5 to 6 and mixing the premix with the other ingredients of the feed.
