Abstract
1462384 E. coli endotoxins UNILEVER Ltd 10 April 1974 [12 April 1973] 17572/73 Heading A5B Lambs are treated to improve their resistance to gastro-intestinal disorders by introducing into the lamb intestine, by way of the mouth, the endotoxins of one or more of the Escherichia coli serotypes 8, 09, 015, 020, 078, 0114, 0137 and 0139, substantially free from the living E. coli organisms. The endotoxins may be administered in water or in a lamb feed at the age of 2-4 weeks. Lamb feed compositions comprise all eight of the E. coli serotypes and a nutrient material preferably comprising protein fat, carbohydrate, vitamins and mineral elements. The endotoxins may be obtained by culturing the E. coli serotype, separating from the culture the bacteria grown in it, and killing the separated bacteria, e.g. by heat, to cause release of endotoxins, the endotoxins remaining bound to the killed bacteria being released by treatment with an enzyme such as trypsin.
