1,167,182. Composite fibrillary yarns. ALGEMENE KUNSTZIJDE UNIE N.V. 6 Oct., 1966 [6 Oct., 1965], No. 44676/66. Heading B5B. A synthetic fibrillary yarn consisting of a plurality of immiscible components distributed over the cross-section of the yarn, within the yarn, substantially as continuous threads, the components being formed as superimposed layers which extend in both directions to the periphery of the transverse cross-section of the yarn, is produced by using a mixing device having stationary guide means to divide the stream of each component into sub-streams and then to re-unite said sub-streams along a regular distribution pattern, so that the main stream is subsequently distributed over the various extrusion orifices such that a plurality of secondary sub-streams of each component passes through each orifice, and solidifying the product thus obtained. Preferably the yarn is enveloped in a thin sheath formed by one of the components, the sheath being applied by using an apparatus wherein the spinneret assembly consists of two plates placed with their extrusion orifices in line and wherein a chamber before the first plate and before the mixer is supplied with different spinning materials, and the chamber between the said plates is supplied with the sheath forming material. The yarns may consist of nylon 6 and polyethylene terephthalate with a nylon 6 sheath or polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylonitrile.
