Abstract
1,167,035. Heat-treatment of tin plated steel strip. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. Oct. 18, 1966[Nov.15, 1965], No.46446/66. Headings C7B and C7N. Apparatus for the continuous heat-treatment of tin plated steel strip 10 while being advanced longitudinally through a heating line comprises a first controlled heating means 12 for applying heat to the strip such that the tin on the surface of said strip is melted at a first location along said heating line to form a clearly distinguishable flow line extending across the width of such strip, and a second controllable heating means 13 to increase the temperature of the strip at a second location, the second heating means being controlled in dependence upon at least one strip condition existing between the two heating locations and affecting the strip temperature therebetween, e. g. the speed of travel of the strip, and the strip thickness and width thereof. As shown the first heating induction coil 12 is controlled with respect to information obtained from a tachometer generator 76 indicating the speed of travel of the strip and from a photo-scanner 68 indicating variations in flow line position, whilst the second heating induction coil 13 is controlled by computer means with respect to the strip width and gauge, the required degree of alloying between the tin and substrate metal, and the speed of travel of the strip as indicated by the tachometer generator 43. The strip thereafter passes through quench bath 15.
