Abstract
One or more induction coils, fed in phase by a medium frequency AC generator, travel along the length of a heat resistant housing which they surround, on a carriage running on guides. The coils are so arranged that the fields between them are in opposition and the effect of moving them is to force molten zones in the material being refined to travel along the crucible. This is mounted on water cooled rails within the housing and this is filled with a protective gas atmosphere. The heat output is regulated by an adjustably positioned short circuiting ring between the coils. May be used for refining e.g. Al.
