Abstract

1,166,894. Rear view mirrors. BARNETT BROS. (GUILDFORD) Ltd. 14 June, 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 13562/67. Heading B7J. [Also in Division E2] A mounting arrangement, e.g. for mounting a mirror on the roof of a motor vehicle comprises a main pneumatic sucker device 18, first, second and third ancillary pneumatic sucker devices 14a, 14b, 14c, disposed at the vertices of a triangle and a housing 13 which is arranged to be mounted on the main sucker device and which carries the ancillary sucker devices, the main sucker device consisting of a diaphragm 19 having a rim portion 19a which is arranged to be pressed against the surface on which the mounting arrangement is to be mounted, a casing to which manual pressure is applicable to press the rim portion against said surface and means 21, 22 for engaging and retracting away from said surface an inner portion 19b of the diaphragm, whilst simultaneously permitting continued pressures by way of said casing on said rim portion. In the construction shown there are two main sucker devices their casings 18 being connected together by a tie 27. Each of the means for engaging and retracting the inner portion of the diaphragm comprises a threaded shank 21 and a nut 22 the nut bearing on the casing 18 so that rotation moves the shank axially. To one end portion of the shank a plate 20 is fixed and the diaphragm is trapped between the plate 20 and a further plate 23 by means of a nut 24. The housing 13 has apertures through which the two shanks 21 pass the housing being retained on the shanks by means of nuts 28 threaded to the shanks. The sucker device 14b is carried by a bracket 15b and the sucker devices 14a and 14c are each carried by a bracket 15a or 15c which is bolted to the housing 13 by means of a bolt 16 the bolts each carrying an arm 17 to which an article is attachable. The main pneumatic sucker devices are intended to hold the arrangement to the surface and the ancillary sucker devices are intended to prevent movement of the arrangement parallel to the surface. The casings 18 are each provided with an apertured tab 25 and the tie 11 also has an aperture 27; screws can be passed through these apertures to secure the casings and the tie to the surface if desired.
