A safety device in a vehicle comprises a catch 11 on a safety strap or safety strap buckle 12 interconnected with a control on the vehicle to prevent the vehicle from being driven until the safety strap is secured by the catch. The catch embodies an electric switch in circuit with a starter motor, starter motor circuit, ignition switch or other safety device on the vehicle. The switch may be connected in series with similar switches on safety straps or buckles on other vehicle seats. The safety straps may be secured to seats which are secured to the vehicle body through an energy absorbing device.
