Heating or cooling plant for a building which is constructed from standard units M and is divided by partitions 3 into rooms A to D comprises supply and return lines 4, 5 respectively for a heating or cooling medium, room apparatuses 1 having heat exchangers connected to a distribution line 6 and the return line 5, valves 7 in the line 6 one between each two units M, those valves at the partitions 3 being closed and the remainder open, and branch lines 8 controlled by room thermostat adjusted valves 9 joining lines 4 and 6, there being one branch line 8 for each two units M which, as shown, is the smallest number in any room. If a plurality of valves 9 are within one room, they are all adjusted by the same thermostat 10. Each valve 9 may be of the two-, three- or four-way type.
