Abstract
1,166,725. Fatliquoring and oiling leather, furskins &c. J. STOCKHAUSEN. March 30, 1967 [March 30, 1966] , No.14590/67. Heading C6C. In a process for oiling or fatliquoring fibrous material such as leather, e. g. pared or shaved, chrome-tanned calf or cowhide leather, and furskin, e. g. pickled and tanned astrakhan skin, the material is treated with a water-soluble alkali metal salt of a chloroparaffin sulphonic acid derived from a liquid or solid, unbranched, saturated paraffin hydrocarbon, e. g. having, on the average, 16, 22 or 24 carbon atoms in the molecular chain. The salt may contain between 2 and 20% of organically bound SO 3 , and between 10 and 60% of organically bound chlorine, by weight. Between 1À0 and 5À0% of the salt, based on the weight of the leather, may be used for treating shaved leather. An aqueous solution of the salt may be used, and such a solution, e.g. containing an electrolyte, may be stabilized by adding an emulsifier. Several suitable emulsifiers are specified. The salt may be prepared by chlorinating and sulphochlorinating, or by sulphochlorinating and, if necessary, chlorinating a paraffin hydrocarbon of the above-mentioned type, and saponifying the product with an alkali, as described in Specification 926, 307 and U.S.A. Specification 2, 334, 764.
