Abstract

1,166,622. Quenching apparatus. EXORS OF JAMES MILLS Ltd. Jan.6, 1967 [Oct. 7, 1965], No.42516/65. Heading C7N. An apparatus for effecting the controlled quenching of metal (e.g. steel) bars comprises:- (a) a bar receiving bank (b) means for advancing hot bars to the bank, (c) a quenching bath (d) a bar supporting means having loading, immersion and discharge positions. (e) means for transferring the bars from the bank to the support means when it is in the loading position in the same order that they have been supplied to the bank (f) a control mechanism for immersing the bar in the quenching bath when the temperature of the bar has fallen to a given value or into a given range (g) means for rejecting from the immersion means any bars about to be immersed which are below the correct temperature or the minimum of the given range (h) a timing device to control the period of immersion and (i) means for discharging the quenched bars. The bars are fed through a gate 14 Fig.1 (not shown) which is closed if the apparatus is full (when the bars are kept in a hot bed 13) and into the apparatus by driven rollers 15 until they reach the end stop 17 and they are then fed by feeding means 18 Fig.4 on to the foremost unoccupied pocket 35 of the bank 10. They are then fed by walking beam means into the bar supporting means 38 Fig. 5 which can immerse the bar in the quenching bath 37 after the temperature has been checked at the intermediate position 38d. After quenching the bar is discharged on to table 62 into trough 63. If the temperature of the bar is too high a delay for air cooling is introduced, if it is too low the bar 64 Fig.4 is brought down over trough 63 and the bar is discharged into reject trough 66, this mechanism also being brought into effect if the bars are not straight. Control of the apparatus by electrical and pneumatic means is also described in connection with Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown).
