1,166,207. Coating apparatus. H. PRINZHORN and H. REINTHALLER [trading as W. HAMBURGER]. 26 April, 1968, No. 19874/68. Heading B2L. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for colour marking cylindrical or conical carriers, such as bobbin tubes, comprises a conveyor adapted to support the carriers for free rotation in spaced relationship and with their axes substantially horizontal and parallel to their direction of travel and with at least one of their ends protruding outwardly and laterally of the conveyor, means for transferring colour at a marking stage to at least a part of the peripheral surface of at least one exposed end portion of said carriers, and at least one roller positioned within said marking stage for imparting rotational movement to the carriers by direct frictional engagement therewith which colour is being transferred thereto. A stack 10 of conical bobbin tubes 9 is separated by means 1 into its constituent members, and the latter are delivered in succession by a shoot 2 on to an endless conveyor 3. The tubes 9 extend at each end beyond a pair of parallel conveyor belts, and are retained in position thereon by upstanding conveyor lugs 14 and by fixed guide plates (11) engaging the ends of the tubes. The projecting ends of tubes 9 pass in succession between a lower applicator roller 17, dipping into a paint receptacle 16 and co-operating with a doctor roller 18, and an upper vertically-adjustable presser roller 19. The rollers 17, 19 are driven from a common source at a speed sufficient to rotate a tube 9 through at least 360 degrees while in contact therewith. Alternatively only roller 17 may be driven, or neither of the rollers may be driven.
