[Also in Division H1] A decimal digit indicating device comprises a plurality of segments 20, Fig. 3, adapted to be illuminated and arranged to be combined in different combinations to form the outline of the decimal digits 0 to 9, the outline of the digit 0 being formed by segments A-C and having a height substantially less than that of the other digits. This makes it easier to pick out the most significant digit when a plurality of devices are arranged in a row to form a display, and the segments A-C can also form the lower part of a 6 or an 8. Fig. 3 shows part of an electronic device wherein electrons from a vertical filament (not shown) pass through a mesh (not shown) and then through the masking electrode 18 on to a fluorescent screen. The fluorescent screen comprises a number of fluorescent areas 15 on a ceramic plate 13, each area corresponding to a segment 20 and being provided with an individual contact 16 connected to a lead-in-wire 12, and the various areas are separated by ridges 14 on the ceramic plate. Thus by selectively energizing the leads 12 corresponding segments 20 are illuminated. Segment K indicates a decimal point and segment J serves as a comma to group the numbers in a display, the remaining segments being used to form the ten digits (Fig. 5, not shown). The invention may also be applied to devices of the electroluminescent, glow discharge, or pilot lamp types.
