1166011 Dental instruments C & B CORP 23 Jan 1968 3500/68 Heading A5R An ultrasonic dental instrument comprises an energizing coil 32 mounted around a jacket member 16 and within a housing 14, there being an electromagnetic transducer (66) within the jacket member and providing, together with a connecting transformer part (68) see also Fig.6 (not shown), a supporting member 18 for a work tool 22, a liquid supply path being provided through an inlet 50 into the jacket member, over the transducer and into a passageway 86 in the supporting member leading towards the work tool. As shown, the work tool 22 includes a tool element 113 and a spray 116, a supply tube 52 providing water to the spray through the jacket member so that heat is dissipated from the dental instrument itself as well as from the tool element 113. A suitable energizing current supplied through the coil from the supply leads 43, 44 causes the tool element to vibrate at ultrasonic frequencies as the electromagnetic transducer (said to be a magnetostrictive laminate or stacks of nickel wire) converts electrical energy into vibrational energy. The work tool 22 see also Fig.7 (not shown) may be detached from the supporting member 18 for replacement or cleaning, a member 20 releasably retains the support member with the transducer within the jacket member, and a member 59 releasably retains the jacket member within the housing.
