Abstract
1,060,973. Magnetostrictive devices; ultrasonic wave couplings. LIBBEY-OWENSFORD GLASS CO. March 3, 1964, No. 8833/64. Heading H4J. A device for the cleaning and surfacing of glass sheets comprises a magnetostrictive transducer coupled to an operating cup 23 by a cylindrical tube 16. A metal plug 15 has a flat face welded at 10c to the base 10a of a magnetostrictive core 10. The lower end of the plug 15 may have a cavity 19b. The tube 16 is secured to the plug 15 and to the cup 23 by heat softenable adhesive such as epoxy resin, or by brazing, soldering or welding. The cup 23 has a flat working surface. When the device is mounted for operation an O-ring is secured in a recess 26 and is forced against a shoulder 20a to provide a liquid-proof seal.
