Abstract

1,165,796. Looms. L. R. WELLMAN. 4 May, 1967 [12 May, 1966], No. 20857/67. Heading D1E. A method of weaving comprises continuously supplying a succession of transversely arranged threads, conveying these threads in a direction normal to their length, separating them at intervals to form successive sheds and introducing successively longitudinal threads into the sheds of the transverse threads whereby the longitudinal threads are interwoven with the transverse threads. Apparatus for carrying out this method comprises on each side of the machine upper and lower conveyor belts 10 passing over rolls 12 at the ends of the machine. These belts are adapted to pick up transverse threads 14 from feeders 16 and carry them in an undulating path provided by succession of guide and transfer pulleys 24, 26 along the length of the machine. At each pair of transfer pulleys 26 the upper threads are transferred to the lower belt and vice versa and in the shed formed in front of each pair of said pulleys a longitudinal thread 30 (Fig. 2) is inserted from a guide tube 40 (Fig. 5) which becomes inter-woven with the transverse threads 14 so that the fabric is progressively built up as it passes along the length of the machine. The fabric is maintained in a plane at its centre line by a pair of guide rods 38 (Fig. 4) extending along the machine and at each shed a longitudinal thread is fed from each side of the machine to build up the fabric from the centre as shown in Fig. 2. The transverse threads are held by hooks at their ends which engage in slots in the belts 10 and the transfer pulleys 26 include cam devices which push the hooks from one belt into the slots of the other and vice versa. The longitudinal threads 30 may be blown through the tubes 40 or mechanical feed means may be employed. Suitable apparatus is provided for supplying the transverse threads 14 of cut length to the machine.
