Abstract
1,165,521. Imidazoline-containing polyamidoamine resins. BECK KOLLER & CO. (ENGLAND) Ltd. 20 Feb., 1968 [22 Feb., 1967], No., 8131/68. Heading C3P. An imidazoline-containing polyamidoamine resin is prepared from a copolymer of a conjugated-unsaturated fatty acid and/or a conjugated unsaturated fatty acid ester or a mixture thereof with one or more ethylenically unsaturated aromatic compounds and one or more amines selected from amines of the formula H(NHCH 2 CH 2 ) x NH 2 , where x is an integer from 1 to 5 inclusive by Ca, preparing the copolymer by continuously adding to the acid and/or ester or mixture thereof from 0.5 to 3 mols. per mol. of the aromatic compound or compound mixture over a period of from 5 to 30 hours, the reaction mixture being stirred and maintained at a temperature of from 150‹ to 250‹ C. in an atmosphere of a gas inert to the reactants, and further heating the reaction mixture at 150‹ to 250‹ C. to complete the reaction; and (b) reacting the resulting copolymer with a substantially equimolar quantity of the amine by heating at a temperature of up to 200‹ C. to form the polyamidoamine; and (c) heating the resulting polyamidoamine resin to a temperature of from 200‹ to 350‹ C. for a sufficient time to convert it to the imidazoline derivative. In the examples dehydrated castor oil fatty acid is copolymerized with styrene in the presence of lauryl mercaptan and di-tertbutyl peroxide and the copolymer treated with diethylene triamine.
