Abstract

1,165,517. Bitumen emulsions. ESSO STANDARD SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE. 14 June, 1968 [21 June, 1967], No. 28370/68. Heading B1V. [Also in Division C3] Anionic bitumen emulsions may be prepared with emulsifiers comprising sulphonated alkyl benzenes derived from polyolefins and consisting predominantly of monoalkyl benzene sulphonates and containing meta dialkyl benzene sulphonates and having a mean molecular weight of 400 to 500, the amount of meta dialkyl benzene present before sulphonation being such that the alkyl benzene sulphonate has an optical density of 0.060 to 0.330. Preferred emulsifiers are obtained by alkylating benzene with polypropylene and sulphonating with oleum. In examples bitumen is heated to 90‹C and emulsified in aqueous sodium sulphonates of benzene alkylated with polypropylene.
