Abstract

1,172,779. Alkaline earth metal sulphonates. ESSO STANDARD SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE. 23 Aug., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966], No. 38881/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] In a process for making alkaline earth metal sulphonates from alkyl aromatic sulphonic acids with unbranched aliphatic chains (by which is meant that the branching for every other carbon atom is at a maximum), the sulphonic acid (optionally dissolved in a mineral oil) is neutralized with an oxide or hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal in the presence of 0À5-1À0% by weight of the total weight of sulphonic acid and (if used) mineral oil of a halide of that metal and an anhydrous low molecular weight aliphatic alcohol (C 1 -C 5 ). An alkyl aromatic sulphonic acid is prepared by reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon of molecular weight 400, obtained by alkylating benzene with a propylene polymer, with liquid SO 2 and liquid SO 3 at - 10‹ C. The salts are detergent additives in motor oils (see Division C5).
