Abstract

1,165,137. Winding gear. A. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. 21 July, 1967 [25 April, 1966], No. 18014/66. Heading B8B. [Also in Division H2] In a motor-driven hoist for raising and lowering a control rod or group of such rods in a nuclear reactor, the driving, e.g. electric, motor 10 is coupled to the hoist via a releasable electromagnetic clutch 13 which comprises a winding 22 which when energized induces a magnetic flux 45 in two coaxial relatively rotatable rotors 24, 28 separated by an air gap 29 defined by opposed rotor surfaces formed by respective sets of similar circumferentially spaced ferromagnetic teeth 42, 44 alternating with non-magnetic recesses, e.g. grooves 41, 43. These effect a locking or synchronous action between the two rotors, whereby the rods may be held stationary in their raised position when the winding is energized and the motor 10 is de-energized, reduction gearing 11 in the drive being irreversible. When the rods are to be inserted into the reactor core the winding 22 is de-energized and the drum 18 unwinds at a speed determined partly by a permanent magnet eddy current brake 15. To raise the rods both motor and clutch are energized. In other embodiments not shown, the teeth extend radially in a planar air gap or at any inclination to the clutch axis. The clutch energizing current may be direct, or alternating in which case its magnetic parts would be laminated. The winding alternatively may be on one rotor and supplied via slip rings.
