1,165,052. Graft polymer of styrene and polybutadiene. DENKI KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 16 June, 1967, No. 27944/67. Headings C3G and C3P. A graft polymer of styrene and polybutadiene is made by bulk polymerizing at 80-120‹ C. a mixture of 85-98 parts by wt. of styrene and 15-2 parts of polybutadiene in the absence of any catalyst or in the presence of less than 0.2% by wt. of dicumyl peroxide until the conversion of the styrene reaches 20-40%, dispersing the product in an aqueous medium containing a dispersing agent, adding dicumyl peroxide in an amount such that its total amount is 0À05-0À5%, suspension polymerizing the mixture at 105-125‹ C. until the conversion reaches at least 70% and continuing the polymerization at 125-140‹ C. until it is complete and the polymer, in bead form, may be washed and dried. The dispersing agent may be a partially saponified polyvinyl acetate, or a copolymer of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride or (dodecyl or hexadecyl) vinyl ether, a polyalkylene oxide, a partially formalized or butyralized polyvinyl alcohol or gelatine. The bulk polymerization may be carried out in the presence of tert. -dodecyl mercaptan. A partially saponified vinyl acetate-dodecyl vinyl ether copolymer is prepared by polymerizing the monomers in methanol with azobisisobutyronitrile and saponifying the copolymer with a methanol solution of sodium methylate.
