A caliper type gauge e.g. for measuring the diameter of glass tubes, comprises a pair of radial arms 22, 23, Fig. 3, supported for swinging movement on respective vertical shafts 24, Fig. 1, journalled in trunnions fixed to a support 28. The arms are downwardly and outwardly extending and fixed at their lower ends are clevises 19, 21 respectively in which workpiece engaging rollers 10,11 respectively are journalled in vertical shafts. The arms are biased toward one another by a tension spring 33 stretched between a pair of links 34, 35 which are pivotally attached to the clevises 19, 21 respectively at projections 37, 38, and are joined pivotally at 36. Coils of a linearly variable differential transformer are within a unit 39 which is fixed to a mounting block 40 having a downwardly extending shaft 41 supported in bearings carried by the roller clevis 21. A movable core 44 of the transformer is fixed to a shaft 45 coupled to an output shaft 46 of a micrometer 47. The micrometer barrel 48 is fixed to a mounting block 49 rotatably mounted by a shaft 50 to roller clevis 19. The micrometer setting as indicated on a counter 56, Fig. 3 and Fig. 2, (not shown), provides an accurate indication of the actual displacement of the rollers 10, 11 when the output voltage of the transformer is zero. The micrometer is normally left in a preset position and deviations therefrom produce an output voltage from the transformer, which may be used to actuate a reject signal.
