Abstract

1,164,876. Filter-separator. ALFA-LAVAL A.B. 4 April, 1967 [7 April, 1966], No. 15406/67. Heading B1D. A hollow, generally cylindrical, inward-flow filter 1 is enclosed in a casing 2 whose lower edge opens into a container 6, which receives the material from casing 2, when filter 1 is cleaned by reverse-flow of filtrate from a downstream reservoir, and acts as a settling tank therefor. Filter 1 may be perforate metal or woven fabric and serves to separate solids and water from oil delivered by pump 17 and through apertures 18. A funnel 9 and pipe 10 in container 6 facilitate downward flow. of material from casing 2, the flow being induced by ejector 11, operated by oil from conduit 4 while conduit 19 completes the circuit. Oil, water and solids are discharged from outlets 12, 13, 14, any of which is opened during reverse flow cleaning. Valves in these outlets may be operated by detectors 15 of the various components, as container 6 is constantly under pressure of pump 17. Outlet 12 may return oil to the untreated oil tank upstream of pump 17. A further pump supplies reverse-flow oil to filter 1. Indicator 16 gives a warning or controls a diverting means if any water is contained in the oil upstream of pump 17. The apparatus may be used to purify mineral oil on a ship.
