In a press having drive means for moving a bed 43 and platen 29 together and apart, the drive means comprising a drive shaft 9, flywheels 11, 13 on opposite ends of the shaft, clutches 12, 15 connecting the flywheels to the shaft, a drive unit (19) connected to one of the flywheels, and a brake 22 for the shaft, means is provided responsive to coming together of the bed and platen to disconnect the clutches and apply the brake, and hold the bed and platen together while one flywheel continues to be driven by the drive unit and the other freewheels. The press described is for embossing, printing and the like. The means for disconnecting the clutches comprises an adjustable stop 70 on the platen 29 which engages a limit switch 71 on the bed 43, the switch 71 being connected in a control circuit seen in Fig. 6 (not shown). Movement of the platen 29 from the position seen in Fig. 4 (not shown) to that in Fig. 3 is effected by a cam follower 31 riding in a cam slot 32 in a gear 26 which is rotated by a pinion 24 on the shaft 9. The cam follower 31 is carried by a rocker arm 30 extending from a shaft 28 on which the platen 29 is mounted. Movement of the bed 43 about its pivot (44), Fig. 2 (not shown), is effected by links 40, (41) eccentrically connected to the gears 25, 26.
