Abstract

1,164,456. Ultrasonic inspection. GLASS DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 22 Nov., 1966 [3 Dec., 1965], No. 51437/65. Heading H4D. Ultrasonic flow-inspection apparatus comprises a probe 22 in a container 19 mounted for rotation about the axis of a workpiece 10 to be scanned and has means for supplying a jet of coupling fluid to the workpiece via an orifice 21. The container 19 is mounted on flange 14 of a member 13 rotatable by motor 39, and its position may be adjusted radially to accommodate workpieces of different diameters. The flange 23 of a stationary support 16 is provided with annular recesses 25, 27, 28 separated by sealing rings 35, 36, 37, 38. Recess 25 provides a communication between container 19 and a coupling-fluid feed-line 26 having a rate control valve 42. Recesses 27 and 28 contain a water or glycerine dielectric and annular electrodes 29, 30 which act with corresponding electrodes 31, 32 on flange 14 as an electrical coupling to the probe. In various modifications the housing end 20 may be frusto-conical rather than hemispherical, the confronting electrodes may be cylindrical members arranged coaxially, the coupling fluid may be supplied via one of the recesses containing an electrode, and one of the electrical couplings to the probe may be by direct contact of flanges 14 and 23 if these are of conducting material.
