Abstract

1319345 Pressure vessel WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 15 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 43900/70 Heading B1X A pressure vessel comprises means for supporting a pressurized fluid which means in the embodiment shown comprises an array of radially disposed segmented blocks 12, annular piston like members 28, 30 pressured by fluid 24, 26 for applying compressive axial stress to the array, and means for applying radial supporting stress to the array, and in another embodiment (not shown) comprises a multiring assembly, the vessel being such that in use with the fluid pressurised to a predetermined level greater than the fatigue stress of the material of the array or of the multi-ring assembly the working stress in the array or at each ring radius of the multi-ring assembly is substantially equal to or less than the fatigue stress. In the embodiment shown, the means for applying radial supporting stress to the array comprises annular chamber 18 containing a second pressurised fluid 14 which is supported by a multi-ring assembly 16, the radial interference(s) of the ring(s) being such that in use with the second pressurised fluid pressurised to a predetermined level, the working stress at each ring radius does not exceed the fatigue stress of the material of the rings.
