Abstract

1,164,347. Polishing copper or copper alloy surfaces. MITSUBISHI EDOGAWA KAGAKU K.K. Aug.2, 1967, No.35442/67. Heading C7U. Copper or a copper alloy e.g. Cu-Zn, Cu-Ni is polished by first forming an oxide coating using a solution comprising hydrogen peroxide, an acid, and at least one saturated aliphatic alcohol, and then removing the oxide film with e.g. an acid (H 2 SO 4 or HNO 3 ), an alkali e.g. ammonia, a complexing agent, e.g. sodium cyanide or a chelating agent, e.g. e.d.t.a. In an example the solution may contain 15% H 2 O 2 , 9À95% H 2 SO 4 , 5% of C 2 H 5 OH, and 0À1 of a non- ionic surface active agent. Other acids that may be used are HF, HNO 3 , HCl, phosphoric, formic, acetic, citric or gluconic acids. The alcohol may be methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and glycerine.
