Abstract

1,163,508. Laying under-water pipe lines. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 27 May, 1968, No. 25229/68. Heading F2P. [Also in Division H2] A method of horizontally, or substantially horizontally, laying a pipe line in a trench in a formation underlying a body of water comprises the steps of making the trench in the formation by removing part of the formation, passing into the trench a liquid that will sink in the trench and fill the trench either simultaneously with, or separately from, the trench forming operation, and laying the pipe line in the said liquid in the trench in a horizontal, or substantially horizontal, position. The liquid may be viscous and have plastering and gel properties and may include carboxy methyl cellulose. The liquid may also be loaded with sand. In one example a pipe line, made by welding together pipe sections on board a ship, is gradually slipped on to the bottom of the sea and a yoke, carrying a number of nozzles supplied with water under pressure, is placed, straddle-legged, over the pipeline and drawn along it, the sea-bottom underlying the pipe being removed by the jet action of the nozzles which are directed downwardly. The rear end of the yoke carries outlets for the trench filling liquid comprising a gel made of 6% by weight bentonite and water, which is pumped into the trench. As the yoke proceeds along the pipeline the latter is gradually lowered into the gel-filled trench. The bentonite has gel qualities which assist in preventing the collapse of the trench side walls and plastering qualities which help to seal the surfaces of the trench. The gel liquid, which may incorporate gel breaking agents, gradually breaks down after a time so that the trench collapses over the pipeline. If desired, the pipeline can be buried deeper by running the yoke for a second time, and the gel may eventually be removed by pumping action. In another method, e.g. for laying a pipeline across a river, the pipeline is floated into position and then lowered into a previously dredged trench filled with gelled liquid. Suitable filling liquids are water with guar gum, floc gel, and polymers, e.g. polyacril compounds, the liquids if necessary being suitably loaded with grains, e.g. sand.
